Resources to Support Your Irish American Heritage Month efforts

Sample Irish American Heritage Month Resolution

WHEREAS, {Your Locale} is home to a vibrant and thriving Irish American community, whose members have made significant contributions to the cultural, social, and economic life of our state; and

Below is a sample Irish American Heritage Month Resolution. It is recommended to tweak it to match your areas, in particular, cite one or two examples of famous Irish Americans in your community (For example a resolution for New Jersey may highlight John Phillip Holland, an Irish immigrant who invented the modern Submarine, a Georgia Resolution may highlight Fr. Peter Whelan who ministered to the prisoners of Andersonville, etc.)

WHEREAS, the month of March has been recognized as Irish American Heritage Month since 1991, providing an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Irish Americans; and

WHEREAS, {Your Locale} has a rich history of Irish American immigration, with many Irish Americans settling in the state during the 19th and 20th centuries, and continuing to make their mark in various fields such as agriculture, mining, education, and politics; and

WHEREAS, the Irish American community in {Your Locale} has preserved and shared its unique cultural heritage through various activities and events, including music, dance, language, and food;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the {the Body making the resolution}, proclaim March as Irish American Heritage Month in {Your Locale}, and encourage all citizens to honor and recognize the significant contributions of Irish Americans to our state and nation;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we recognize the importance of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Irish American community in {Your Locale}, and encourage individuals and organizations to participate in activities and events that celebrate and highlight the contributions of this important community;

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that we express our appreciation and gratitude to the Irish American community in {Your Locale} for their many contributions to our state, and encourage all {what you call your state residents, i.e. “New Yorkers”, “Pennsylvanians” etc.} to join us in celebrating Irish American Heritage Month.
